Sankey-diagrams have proven an effective instrument in the optimisation process and at the same time improve the visual impact and add a clear message to your reports and presentations.

| What is a Sankey-diagram? |
A Sankey-diagram is a graphical representation of flows (mass per time, volume per time, money per time), e.g. of energy or materials through a system. Usually the flows are represented by arrows. The width of the arrows is proportional to the size of the actual flow. Better than numbers, tables or descriptions Sankey-diagrams show quickly and intuitively, which flows bring along benefits and which ones cause waste and emissions.

| Who was Matthew Sankey? |
The irish engineer Matthew Henry Phineas Riall Sankey (1853 - 1921) was the first one to use the volume proportional representation of energy flows to analyse the efficiency of steam engines.
